Subject: Pokesdown Station - Response to Government Consultation

Dear Sir/Madam

Please find the following response to the South Western Rail Franchise consultation.

The Pokesdown Community Forum in conjunction with local Councillors and the
MP for Bournemouth East, Tobias Ellwood has been spearheading a campaign for
the installation of lifts at Pokesdown Station. The campaign itself has been
running for approximately 3 years and I am sure it is one that you are
familiar with as it has been raised in Parliament on a number of occasions.
Indeed myself and my colleague, Cllr Jane Kelly were invited to the DfT
Offices to discuss the campaign with the former Minister for Transport,
Baroness Kramer in March this year.

Whilst the focal point of the campaign has rightly been the accessibility
angle and those unable to use the station, clearly this has wider economic
and regeneration aspect to it in terms of the eastern side of Bournemouth
which has been recognised by the Chamber of Trade, Sosba and the Bournemouth
Coastal Bid in their support for the campaign. The petition for the
installation of lifts has attracted over 1500 signatures so far:-

In addition Access Dorset, a leading disability group, produced this
excellent video for us which has been seen by many including key members
within the DfT team:-

At a meeting with Tobias Ellwood and Malcolm Page from SWT earlier in the
year it was agreed that SWT would commission a feasibility report for us on
the exact works that would need to be undertaken at Pokesdown Station with
an overall cost of the works. I've included the link to this below. The key
figure as you'll see is £1,049,096.24.

It goes without saying that the campaign team is determined to keep lobbying
for 'Access for All' funding to be made available to pay for the
installation of the lifts. However, it is recognised that having this
commitment in a future franchise contract is likely to be the best way
forward in terms of making the installation of these much needed lifts a

Taking all of the above into consideration I would therefore ask that the
installation of lifts is included in the new franchise agreement for
Pokesdown Station in 2017.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sir/Madam

Further to my email below in respect of the South Western Rail Franchise
consultation, please can you advise when a decision will be announced in
respect of the new franchisee and whether the installation of much needed
lifts at Pokesdown Station will be included in the contract.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
